Dreaming about Landscapes

Landscape painting is now undisputedly considered an important genre in the history of art in both the Western and Eastern worlds. However, for a long time in the Western context, landscape was consigned to be the background for portraits or history paintings on set themes such as religious, mythological, and historical subjects. Not until the Renaissance in the XVI century, that landscape paintings have created variations of its genre by shifting the focus to the appreciation of nature and space itself. Today, together with the burgeoning interest in the connection between memory and geography, as well as the rise of the digital age, artists have expanded beyond their canvas to continue exploring the nuances of landscape through video, photography, printmaking, and other forms of mixed media. “Dreaming of Landscapes” is a special tribute to the Old masters’ perception of landscape and how the definition and expression of landscape has altered today in the Vietnamese contemporary context of the last century. Overall, it is an effort to relate our being with the places and time that we are living in, as well as to record the impacts, the emotions, and memories that we have on the land and our environment.
